Story
How it all began...
The Grand Hotel Excelsior stands perched on the coast about 5 km from the centre of Amalfi, the fruit of the creative spirit and genius of its founder Gaetano Amendola.
A native of Amalfi for many generations, as a child Dr. Amendola was fascinated by the “strilloni” of the various hotels at the time that beckoned tourists descending from the various steamships at Amalfi harbour.
Thus, he decided to start this new and exciting hotel business in the place he loved so much and where he used to withdraw to study.
Work began in 1959 and in 1962 the doors opened, of what is still one of the largest hotels on the Amalfi Coast, a favourite destination of the Italian and international jet set.
Its rooms and salons have hosted important celebrities from the world of politics, cinema and Italian and international music, from Gustav of Sweden to unforgettable evenings with Peppino di Capri.
