Capri
CAPRI
The Island of Capri is known as 'un pezzo di cielo caduta in terra' (a piece of paradise fallen from the skies.). Legend has it that Capri is the Paradise Lucifer stole and transplanted in Italy. Mythical Capri lives up to its name: it is captivating, capricious and cute.
Capri has always been something of a paradise for pleasure-seekers, and among the first to be captivated by its beauty were the Romans. Augustus visited Capri on his return to Italy from his victory over Anthony and Cleopatra; instantly taken by its beauty, he exchanged the island for Ischia which was already in his possession. Tiberius was also inspired by the place and spent the last years of his life here - a decade of crime and depravity.
Capri is still beautiful; the precipitous coastline of deep coves and grottoes and weirdly-shaped rocks, and the luxuriant gardens and panoramic views are superb
The centre of Capri Town is small, chic and quaint with little white houses, cobbled passageways and where some of the most exclusive designer's have boutiques. Follow the cliffside pathway for a fantastic view of Marina Piccola with its tourquoise waters, where Gracie Fields lived and died.
If walking is not your idea of happiness, just join the other sybarites sitting in the piazzette and remember that Augustus called Capri Apragopolis (City of Sweet Ildleness) or, as the Italians would say, dolce far niente (pleasant idleness).
